reMarkable 2, Onyx Note Air, SuperNote 5x or Onyx Max Lumi? Which one to buy? A Summary
Here I summarize the advantages and disadvantages of the four most popular models in the market and choose the best option according to your needs.
The four most popular e-ink devices for note taking and reading are:
The Onyx Note Air, the reMarkable 2, the Onyx Max Lumi and the Super A5X.
Let’s see what makes them the best choice according to your use case.
Use case # 1:
to read PDF files, in particular technical and academic PDFs and/or
to make notes and plans on an A4-sized screen
Onyx Max Lumi is clearly the best choice for these use cases with its sharp and large 13.3″ (A4 size) screen, great reading functionality and very good writing experience. It also offers a great place to try out your ideas by writing and drawing on its large screen. It has front light which is very helpful for focused reading anywhere. No doubt it is the best device of its class, with no competition.

Use case # 2:
To write down notes and ideas with only occasional reading of small PDF and ePub files
The reMarkable 2 with its fantastic writing experience (simply the best) and superb design but limited reader capability and no front light is a good choice, competing with the Note Air whose writing experience is very good but can’t beat that of the reMarkable 2.
Note:
You can’t get it from Amazon and customers have reported a poor experience when purchasing directly from the reMarkable company (the only option currently), in particular with returns and when the device comes with any issue.
Use case # 3:
To read ePub and PDFs and make notes and plans on a portable device that has a good size
The Onyx Note Air with its outstanding reading functionality, very good writing experience, Kindle app, solid and comfortable format, automatic screen rotation, front light and portable screen size (10.3″) is a perfect choice. It is also the less expensive among the devices here.
Note:
Be aware that its default pen doesn’t offer the best experience. For a low price you can buy an additional digital pen. Choose among those listed below.

And what about the Super Note A5X?
The Supernote devices, including the latest model A5X, have the same design as the reMarkable 1, nearly 3 years old. They are made of plastic and are not thin. Its reading functionality is limited and its writing experience is comparable to the devices above. It has no front light. It’s simply not a good option with the choices that you have above.
